A few years ago I was coo coo for cocoa puffs.
Today I am coo coo for carrots. In the 80’s I was raised on sugar cereals, soda, McD’s, hot dogs, canned veggies, and I thought pancakes and bacon were a well balanced breakfast. Then one day someone blew my mind. They said that sugar was killing me!
I thought, how could sugar be killing me? I was thin, active, healthy or what I thought was healthy, and I felt great. Then I thought about things like my eczema. Why did I have that and why do I have to bathe in steroid cream every time I have a flair up. I also thought about my terrible menstrual cramps. Cramps so painful that when I had my first child I didn’t know I was having contractions because I was so accustomed to that level of misery. I thought about my acne. Could sugar be the cause? I Gotta Have My Pops but I don’t gotta have them on my face!
So I listened to this person and started slowly cutting sugar out of my diet – just to see if I could do it. That was so difficult because I didn’t realize how many things that I ate every day had some form of sugar in it. They gave me a book called “Sugar Blues” and “Lick The Sugar Habit” which set me on the path to a better way of eating to live. In these books I learned that my diet was the cause of my cramps, eczema, gingivitis, mood swings, fatigue, and a whole host of problems I thought were normal.
I told myself I didn’t want my children to inherit the same poor eating habits that most of us have in the United states. I vowed to become a healthier person for the future. In July 2008 I became pregnant with my first baby and immediately began doing research on all the vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy newborn.
I had such great results and peace of mind by changing my diet that I wanted to share it. I’m a regular person who had no idea what being healthy really meant and so I was eager to learn. Family members laughed in my face. I became an outcast at the dinner table and they even tried to tempt me with my favorite treats. Misery loves company.
